Gas Safety Inspection

Commercial kitchens rely on a number of appliances and equipment to function, but one of the most important is gas. Despite how many gas appliances and equipment there are in your kitchen, it is still important that you understand commercial kitchen gas safety, and all safety measures are taken to minimise risk as much as possible.

Nova Catering Repairs can provide a fully qualified gas appliance engineer to repair, install, and service your gas kitchen equipment. We further offer Gas Safety checks, an annual legal requirement for if your commercial kitchen contains any gas equipment.

What to expect from a Gas Safety Inspection

During a Gas Safety inspection, your gas safe registered engineer will ensure your kitchen meets current regulations and your appliances are operating safely and efficiently.

This includes surveying your commercial kitchen gas installation and ventilation for proper extraction of harmful fumes; completing gas leak tests and reviewing potential risks that could occur to staff or public.

Engineers will moreover take readings of the air quality in the kitchen to ensure staff are not being subjected to harmful fumes, and examine the efficiency of your gas appliances to confirm they are working correctly.

Gas Safety checks help to prevent poor maintenance of gas appliances, which can cause hazardous and harmful situations in a commercial kitchen - one of these being incomplete combustion and the subsequent release of deadly carbon monoxide.

They also ensure your commercial kitchen has correct ventilation, without which harmful by-products of burning natural gas and LPG would occur within the kitchen environment.

    What is a CP42 certificate?

A CP42 Certificate is the official name for a Gas Safety certificate; all commercial catering businesses who use gas or gas appliances must hold this certification in order to use natural gas or LPG equipment.

The CP42 is only legally recognised if awarded by a Gas-Safe Registered engineer, who must carry out this inspection once a year for your commercial kitchen to be Gas Safe.

If your commercial kitchen does not have a CP42 Certificate, you risk not being insured, alongside facing legal prosecution, such as a fine or even prison time.

Who is responsible for a CP42 Certificate?

Landlords are responsible for organising a Gas Safety check on privately owned or commercial property; they are moreover required to pay for this service, and cannot charge tenants to do so.

A Gas-Safety certificate can only be granted by a Gas-Safe engineer – this is someone who is legally able to work with Gas equipment, and ensure gas equipment is safe for use. A Gas-Safe engineer will carry an ID card, and can be found on the Gas Safe Register.

How does a gas interlock system work?

The gas interlock system is a safety device installed in commercial kitchens which ensures the gas supply is only engaged when the ventilation requirements of your installation are met. This device is a legal requirement in a commercial catering business and its maintenance forms an essential part of your annual Gas-Safety check.

The device monitors the extraction of harmful fumes and the supply of fresh air to your kitchen; if either were to fail there is a potential for those working in the kitchen to be exposed to the dangerous gases produced by commercial catering gas appliances. To keep kitchen operatives safe the system recognises the ventilation failure and disrupts the supply of gas to the kitchen.
