Gas Kitchen Equipment Installation

Kitchen equipment designed specifically for use with gas is becoming more popular in commercial kitchens. Gas equipment can boast several advantages over electric cooking appliances including lower costs, higher speeds, and energy efficiency.

So, when it comes to purchasing new gas kitchen equipment, you'll want to make sure that it is installed correctly for safety and durability, in order to make the most out of your appliance.

Installing the cooking appliances incorrectly can result in damage to your building, injury, or even fatality to those working on-site, in addition to carbon monoxide poisoning, and many other hazardous results.

Nova Catering Repairs are Gas Safe Registered and fully qualified to perform gas kitchen appliance installation.

    Gas Appliances

It is a legal requirement that your gas appliances – whether natural gas or LPG – are fitted by a Gas Safe Registered engineer, or other HSE-approved class, due to the dangers gas appliances can pose.

This applies to both domestic and commercial properties. A Gas Safe identity card should be produced by a Gas Safe Registered engineer in order to prove they are competent to service your gas appliances, or, alternatively, they can be validated by the online Gas Safe Register.

Nova Catering Repairs are fully certified to work with a range of equipment - including gas equipment - and can safely install your commercial kitchen gas appliances for you.

What are the regulations for fitting a commercial gas cooker?

There are a few regulations for gas oven installation that need to be followed by a commercial kitchen looking to fit a gas cooker.

Firstly, gas cookers need a minimum of 20mm of free space on either side, unless stated otherwise by the manufacturer guide, and adequate clearing from any combustible items or surfaces. A minimum of 50mm should be kept between the back of the cooker and the wall, and 500mm from a window or door. This is to prevent the likelihood of accidents if your gas cooker breaks down. Furthermore, gas appliances must have proper ventilation, including range hoods, which must be at least 600mm above the cooking appliance, and exhaust fans, which should be placed 750 mm above the appliance. A fitting certificate can be issued to confirm your gas appliance complies with regulations.

Gas cookers must be fitted by a Gas Safe-Registered engineer, and pass an annual Gas Safe inspection, carried out by a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

Do I need a Gas Safe engineer to disconnect my cooker?

A Gas Safe Registered engineer can be anyone who is competent to work with gas appliances, and is Gas Safe Registered to prove this.

A Gas Safe engineer is necessary for the connection and disconnection of a gas cooker, since it means working directly with gas pipes, whether that be natural gas or LPG (liquid petroleum gas) tanks. It is a government requirement in the UK according to the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 Act that “the open end(s) of any metal pipe(s) from which a gas fitting has been disconnected should be sealed with an appropriate metal fitting”.

Therefore, correctly disconnecting an old or unwanted gas cooker requires working with gas pipes - a job which can only be undertaken by a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

Can you fit a second-hand commercial gas appliance?

A second-hand gas appliance can be installed and used by a commercial catering business, as long as it adheres to certain safety requirements and is installed by a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

These safety requirements include, but are not limited to: components of the gas appliance must be in working order, as to avoid gas or dangerous fumes leaking; gas shut off devices must work swiftly and effectively; flames from grills should not exceed the length of grill and surface temperatures of your gas appliance should not be dangerously high; seals on the oven door must work; the appliance must be stable when free-standing.

A CE mark on the gas appliance proves it conforms to EU regulations – however, this is valid for the time it was manufactured, so it is worth having a Gas Safe Registered engineer perform a maintenance check to ensure your second-hand appliance fulfils the full list of safety checks.

For the complete list of safety checks, your gas cooking appliance must meet, see here.
